Betrayed, she felt betrayed. Desperately wanting to shout at him and blame him for his stupidity, she couldn’t. She couldn’t find the words. Before her sat a broken man. What hurt more than anything else was that he had not trusted her, otherwise he would have told her. It was only now coming out because finally she had reached breaking point and told him that she wouldn’t put up with his behaviour any longer. She knew he hadn’t slept properly for weeks, prowling around the house in the middle of the night. The red circles around his eyes were testimony to that. The wrinkles across his forehead and between his eyes were deeper than she had ever remembered them. His eyes were bloodshot from trying to bury it all in drink. His skin looked sallow.

“Say something, Ros. If only that you hate me,” Paul said.

Ros took two mugs out of the cupboard and popped one tea bag in each, her hands shaking. “You should have told me. We’ve always shared everything. No secrets. Isn’t that what we promised each other on our wedding day? Did you think I’d walk away?”

“You should have,” Paul said.

“So, all our savings are gone, and our income’s gone right down?” Ros said.

Paul nodded. “The rainy-day fixed bonds are still there but we can’t touch them for the next three years. We hadn’t even got enough in the bank to pay the increased service charge that will be due next month…And then yesterday evening, as if by magic, there was the chance of getting hold of some cash fast – enough cash to see us through the next year if we were careful. I wanted that dagger to be sold and for us to get our share of the proceeds, not because I felt it my right or was greedy, but because I knew it might mean the difference between our staying here or having to sell up. I saw it as a lifesaver, a lifesaver that Gabby snatched away from us. That’s when I lost it.”

“It was not ours to sell. It belongs to somebody. It was only you who wanted it sold. Don’t blame Gabby,” Ros said.

“I sold Vesper this morning,” Paul whispered, the memory still raw. “I had to do something. I couldn’t let you lose this place. It was the only option left, and I’d found someone who was interested.”

Reaching out for his hand, she squeezed it tight. She knew how much it must have hurt him to part with the Mustang. It had been a part of him, man and boy. It was a measure of how desperate he must have been. “You stupid man, you should have talked to me.”

“We’ve got cash in the bank to see us through now if we’re really careful,” he said. “I just couldn’t bring myself to tell you that we might lose this place.”

“It wouldn’t have come to that, if only you’d spoken to me.” Ros paused. She had planned to tell him one day, at the right time.
